Antifouling Potentials of Seaweeds Collected from the Southwest Coast of India

چکیده
In the present study, a total of ten seaweed species collected from the Kollam coast (Indian ocean) were subjected to antifouling assays against the common fouling organisms such as Balanus amphitrite, Mytilus edulis and three biofilm forming bacteria, Vibrio sp., Colwellia sp. SW125 and Pseudoalteromonas sp. SW124. Of all the seaweeds tested, only one species, the red algae, Laurencia brandenii displayed broader spectrum of activity. The active principle of L. brandenii was purified in column chromatography and was identified by GC-MS. The GC-MS profile of L. brandenii suggested the purified fraction is primarily composed of octadecadienoic acid (49.75%) followed by n-Hexadecanoic acid (14.24%) which could have functional role in the chemical defense against fouling organisms and it could be utilized for the development of ideal antifoulants in future.

BIOACTIVITY OF THE RED ALGAE Asparagopsis taxiformis COLLECTED FROM THE SOUTHWESTERN COAST OF INDIA
Among the diverse variety of red algae, Asparagopsis taxiformis constitutes one of the abundant biomass in the Kollam coast (Southwest coast of India). Therefore, in the present study, A. taxiformis was collected, extracted and fractionated using column chromatography. The individual fractions were evaluated in vitro for their antifouling, anticyanobacterial, piscicidal and crustaceans toxicity...
متن کاملHeavy metal accumulation in seaweeds and sea grasses along southeast coast of India
Generally, heavy metals enter into the aquatic environment through atmospheric deposition, erosion of geological matrix or due to anthropogenic activities caused by industrial effluents, domestic sewage and mining wastes. The present study analyzed the concentration of seven elements (Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zi and Hg) in eight seaweeds such as Centrocerous clavutum, Sargassum wightii, Colpemenia s...
متن کاملComparative study on the liver fatty acid profiles of the red toothed trigger fish (Odonus niger) from southwest coast of India
In order to find an alternative source for the highly unsaturated fatty acids oil with lower cost, a marine trash fish Odonus niger has been analysed and characterised. The body weight and the corresponding liver weight of the fish were studied and the results showed that for one gram increase in the size of the animal, the liver weight can increase to 0.04 g. The oil yielding capacity of the...

This work reported on the in vitro antibacterial activity of six selected marine algae (seaweeds) which have been selected and their extracts have been tested as an alternative to commonly used antibiotics. Extracts of six seaweed samples namely Codium decorticatum, Caulerpa scalpelliformis, Gracilaria crassa, Acanthophora spicifera, Sargassum wightii and Turbinaria conoides were collected from...

The main aim of the study was to evaluate the various minerall and heavy metals parameters of seaweeds present in the south coastal line. The five red seaweeds namely Acanthophora deliei, Scinaia furcellata, Porphyra tenera, Gracilaria verucosa and Hypnea species were collected from the Pamban, South east coast India. These samples were analyzed for its mineral contents such as sodium, potassiu...
